Hunterâs deep and rhythmic breathing told his mother that the lad was still sound asleep. Terri wasnât surprised, Aunt Diana keeping the youth up way past his normal bedtime with her seemingly endless energy devoted to playing games and exploring with the tot.
âHeâs a wonderful child,â the Allianceâs leader whispered over Terriâs shoulder. âYou and Bishop are doing a great job as parents; especially given the difficult environment we find ourselves in.â
âBishop and I both feel guilty about Hunter sometimes. His father is away a lot, and I have my projects as well,â Terri replied, following her friend back toward the large homeâs main room.
Two cups of steaming tea were steeping on the coffee table, surrounded by a plush sectional that faced a wall of windows. âHeâll want to go swimming again as soon as he has breakfast,â Terri said, nodding toward the pool beyond the glass. âHe thinks he is in paradise. Thanks for inviting us over while the guys are out of town.â
âThis is a working vacation,â Diana responded, her eyes traveling to the stack of documents piled near the cups. âWeâve gotten a lot done, but thereâs always more to do, it seems.â
âI think we should name the legislation Nathan Hillâs Law,â Terri offered out of the blue. âIt was that young manâs death that got this whole thing started.â
Smiling in agreement, Diana reached for a pencil and made a note. âI like it!â she chirped. âIt adds a personal touch to what is always a sensitive subject.â
âI remember how big a problem immigration was before the collapse,â Terri added. âIt seemed like the headlines were always filled with some story about an illegal alien committing a crime, or the border patrol making arrests. Other newscasters would then retaliate with reports supporting the age-old truth that America was built by immigrants, touting that we always need a fresh influx of ideas. This problem has never been simple or clear cut.â
âIt never is when youâre dealing with human life,â Diana agreed. âWhat weâre working on here is just the beginning; we have a long way to go to get to the finish line. Iâm sure my political opponents will find a hundred things wrong with what weâve managed to outline.â
âStill, it will make things better than they were before. The Alliance will always benefit from fresh perspectives, new ideas, and new workers. On the other hand, we canât just let anybody in. That is dangerous and disruptive,â Terri commented.
âI agree,â Diana nodded. âI think this regulation will pass the council and be enacted in short order. I want you to help me implement this initiative, at least as much as you can.â
The two women continued to debate the content of Nathanâs Law as they sipped their tea. Just like their previous sessions, both became excited about the opportunity to make things better for Alliance citizens and speed up the recovery efforts.
As the discussion continued, Terriâs face wrinkled with a pained expression. âYou know,â she began, âthis might be the only positive thing to come out of our crossing paths with Blackjack Jones.
